Valentine's Day:

February 14th is approaching fast and, of course, things this year will be a little different.  It just so happens that the 14th is on a Sunday this year and students do not have school on Friday the 12th or on Monday the 15th. So, hold off on the candy and packaged valentines, here is the plan...

During the week of February 8 - 11, our Positivity Project (P2) activities will be focused on "Love."  Their definition of love is that you value close relationships with others and being close to people. The character strength of love represents the way we think, feel, and behave towards the people with whom we have close relationships.

Our class will have activities and lessons throughout the week that will take the place of the traditional card exchange.  No need to send anything in from home, we will handle it all in-house.

This Week's Learning

Positivity Project (P2): This coming week we will be focusing on the character strength of "Integrity" - You are honest and speak the truth. You present yourself genuinely and sincerely.

ELA: This week we will begin a new unit continuing our work with making inferences and drawing conclusions. Your student will find evidence and clues found in a text to support a conclusion. They will also keep practicing making inferences to help better understand ideas not found in the text.

Writing/Word Work: In writing we will continue working on persuasive writing. This week we will be planning out our persuasive writing using a graphic organizer, begin writing our introduction, how to organize an essay and how to properly identify your facts vs an opinion. Your student will also work with the Latin root word aud-(to listen or hear something,) this week and discover words that have this root.

Math:  This week we will continue our multi-digit multiplication unit. Your student should have brought home their home link packet Tuesday and you may notice that it is out of order; we have decided to re-structure the unit to better teach and extend the concepts within this unit. They are in the order that we will be teaching each concept in class. Please continue to work on mastering single digit multiplication fact fluency at home each night (this can be done with flash cards, using an online program or any other method that words well for your child).

Monday: Lesson 4-2: I can make estimates and evaluate the reasonableness of my answers.
Tuesday: Lesson 4-3: I can solve multiplication problems by partitioning rectangles.
Wednesday: Continuing Lesson 4-3
Thursday: Lesson 4-6: I can multiply multi-digit numbers by using the partial-products strategy.
Friday: Continuing Lesson 4-6

Science:  This week in science we will create a working model of a human eye. With this model, we will discover the basics of how our eyes work and explore some of the causes of vision problems.

Have a great week!

Mr. Hernandez
