Student Quarantine Guidelines

Who stays home and when can get confusing. When you are in doubt, always refer to our Student Health Screener linked here and posted on the main page of our district website sjschools.org. 

Quarantining is a preventive measure.

If a student was a close contact with someone who tested positive they will be asked to quarantine. For example, a student would be in quarantine if a parent tested positive for COVID.

If a student was in close contact with someone who was a close contact with someone who tested positive, s/he can come to school. For example, if a parent was a close contact with a positive case and had to quarantine but is not positive themselves then their child can still come to school.


A family can self-quarantine in any case if they so choose, we will honor their absence.

Homework

Each day homework should consists of reading 20+ minutes at home. Along with this I would like to add to have your student practice multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is crucial and essential to our learning this year.

Students also have their home link for math. More information can be found below.

A very helpful tool students should be using is their online resources. Accessing our online programs has been limited this year as we do not yet have 1:1 computers in our classroom. I am hopeful that the districts computer order will arrive within the month! Lexia Core 5 and IXL can be accessed through the Clever website (link can be found under "Useful Websites" on our Google Classroom page). Students can also access Freckle (Math and ELA practice), Khan Academy (Math, ELA and Computer Programing - students should click on "sign-in with Google" when logging in) and Epic (Reading and Listening to Reading - can only be accessed for free during the school day but they do offer a paid service that your student can use outside of the school day.)

This Week's Learning

ELA: This up coming week we will continue building upon our work with identifying main idea and supporting details, asking questions and begin our genre study on biographies. Last week your student also completed their first writing piece as in introduction and getting them back into the swing of writing. We also introduced our first graded writing piece of an imagined narrative. This week we will continue our brainstorming process, and begin writing our introductions. We will also continue reading through our read aloud Holes

Math: We will continue our first unit next week, and transition from pace value and rounding to reviewing addition and subtraction through word problems. Your students were introduced to our math workshop this passed week that may be new to some of our students. This method allows students to have a variety of different instruction and exposure to the content through direction instruction, small groups, math games and riddles, and independent work. 

Your student should have brought home the Home Link packet last week that goes along with our math unit. Students will have work on most days of the week. I will always include the lessons we are working on in the blog each week so that you know when to work on each home link. These home links are not going to be turned back in, but I highly recommend that students work on them each week so that they can show you what they have worked on. I don't mind if students work a bit ahead in the packet; it is also ok if you miss a night and have to come back to that particular lesson on a different day. Times are unpredictable and I completely understand that you may have prior commitments on certain days of the week 

Last week we covered lessons 1-1 through 1-5. This week we will cover: 

Monday: 1-6 Solving multi-step word problems with addition and subtraction

Tuesday: 1-7 Traditional Addition

Wednesday: 1-8 Continued Addition through Math Games

Friday: 1-8 Continued

Science: This week we will move to our first mystery with sound waves. Last week we did an investigation on sound waves through music. Your student will work with connecting sound and vibrations through engineering and exploring sound and vibrations in space. This weeks activity your student will create a paper cup telephone experiment and explore how sound travels.
