NWEA Testing:
This week we will be taking our math and reading NWEA assessments. These are not assessments that students can study for but rather are a "check in" to see how students are progressing from one assessment to the next. You will receive a copy of their assessment data with their spring report cards.

This week's learning:
Positivity Project (P2): This coming week we will be focusing on the character strength of "prudence" - You plan for the future and achieve your goals by making careful everyday choices.
ELA: This week we are starting our second Reader's Theater performance. Students will practice their part all week (focusing on reading accurately and fluently) and will perform for their classmates on Friday.
Writing: We began our persuasive writing unit last week by going on a scavenger hunt for persuasive and opinion writing pieces. We also worked on identifying different forms of opinions found in advertisements, reviews, magazines and in books. This week we will be diving a bit deeper into those persuasive and opinion pieces we found in our scavenger hunt to identify what really makes them fit this writing style.Math: We spent last week really focusing on reviewing fractions and using our manipulative fraction circle pieces to identify how fractions can be compared with like and unlike denominators. This weeks focus:
Monday: Lesson 3-6 - I can compare fractions in number stories.
Tuesday: Lesson 3-7 - I can learn strategies to order fractions and place them accurately on a number line.
Wednesday: NWEA Math assessment
Thursday: Lesson 3-8 - I can explore the relationships between fractions and decimals.

Science: This week in science we are beginning a new unit: the human machine! This introductory human body unit takes the perspective that we can think about our bodies as being like a machine. We have parts for moving around, sensors, and a built-in computer. Students explore their senses and consider how the information we process helps us understand and react to our environment.
Lesson 1: Many people know on some vague level that muscles are responsible for the body’s movement… but what *exactly* do the muscles do? As your child will discover this week: the muscles work by pulling on bones at the joints. The muscles do this via strings called tendons. Your child will create a paper model of a finger based on their understanding of this process.
Any visit to the grocery store is an opportunity for you and your child to observe exactly what muscle looks like! The meat on display at the grocery store--whether chicken, fish, pork, or beef--is the muscles of those animals.
Social Studies: This week we will continue to focus on learning the physical characteristics of the Unites States. Big ideas from this lesson are:
-Place is an important theme in geography.
-Geographers investigate both the physical and human characteristics of a place.
-Physical characteristics include land forms, bodies of water, climate and vegetation.
-The United States has a wide variety of physical characteristics.
